Freedom Fighter

He was an Indian Nepali poet and lyricist from Darjeeling, India. Notable awards- Ratnashree Gold Award

Capt. Ramsingh Thakuri is one of the most well known Indian Gorkha Freedom Fighter. He is the composer of the current version of the Indian National Anthem, Jana Gana Mana. After the fall of Singapore, the Japanese forces took a large number of prisoners of war of these, a large number volunteered to join the Indian National Army. Thakuri, who had initially now volunteered, was sent to Japan, Where he met Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose. Thakuri later joined the Indian Army as it was reorganized under the leadership of Bose. In 1944, Capt, Ram Singh Thakuri was decorated by Subash Chandra Bose for his contributions. Thakuri also received a violin and a saxophone as gifts from Bose.

Also known as Gandhi of the hills, was from Kalimpong as an avid nationalist and was admired by Mahatma Gandhi himself.

He was born on the 7th December 1909, at Permaguri and was locally known as Nehru Bajey.

An unsung freedom fighter who helped Netaji Bose to escape and fought alongside Mahatma Gandhi in the Non-Corporation movement.

He once drove Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose's car during his INA days. He died in Darjeeling and is one of the last freedom fighters in the hills.

One of the participants of the Naval uprising of 1946. He was one of the last surviving freedom fighters in this region.

He was sentenced to death in Manipur for waging a war against the British occupation. He was the first Gorkha freedom fighter here for India.

He was the first Indian independence activist from Sikkim. In Sikkim and north Bengals, Pokhrel is popularly called” Bandy Pokhrel”.

Capt. Dal Bahadur Thapa Joined the INA in 1942 and was captured in the Jungles of Manipur on June 28, 1944 and executed on May-3, 1945 at Lal Kila Jail Delhi.
